Salute to Brevard Weekend

As a salute to the supportive residents of Brevard County, Delaware North Companies Parks & Resorts at Kennedy Space Center is hosting the Twelfth Annual Salute to Brevard Residents, a free weekend and food drive, October 21-23, 2011. The Brevard resident and up to five guests will enjoy free admission to Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex for this three-day celebration. Residents need to show proof of residency, in the form of a driver's license or utility bill, to gain complimentary admission to the Visitor Complex.

Guests are encouraged to bring canned goods and non-perishable food items to benefit the Central Brevard Sharing Center, North Brevard Charities and South Brevard Sharing Center. While not mandatory for complimentary admission, the suggested donation is at least one food item or canned good per guest.

Please note: Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex anticipates high attendance during this weekend.

Lil' Sports Classes at PSJ Com Center

Starting Sept. 8th, Lil' Sports Classes will begin at the Port St. John Community Center!

Lil' Sports and Fitness is a specially designed program for children ages 2.5 - 5 years and is structured to teach the basics in a variety of different sports in a safe, encouraging environment. All the while incorporating various fitness activities that will improve your child's hand eye coordination, gross motor skills, peer-to-peer relationships, and instilling healthy and active lifestyle habits.

We hold classes throughout Brevard and we're really excited to now offer this awesome program to the parents and children of PSJ!

Classes will be held every Thursday at 5:30pm and are 45min long.

Classes are weekly and are only $30 for the entire month.

State Aid & Library Cooperative Funding Eliminated in Senate TTED Appropriations Subcommittee Proposed Budget – Contacts Needed Now!

On March 21, 2011 the Senate Transportation, Tourism and Economic Development Appropriations Subcommittee proposed a budget entirely eliminating State Aid to Public Libraries and Library Cooperative (MLC) funding.

Library advocates need to contact members of the Senate TTED Committee NOW – before the end of business Wednesday or Thursday noon at the latest. They will vote on their proposed budget Thursday afternoon.

Floridians and Florida libraries need $21.2 million for State Aid to Public Libraries and $1.2 million for Library Cooperatives!

State Aid is critical to library support for job seekers, those seeking E-Government services, and support for early learning. Elimination of State Aid will result in a decrease in the $9 million in federal Library Services and Technology Act funds Florida currently receives. Public lLibrary funding generates a $8.32 return on investment. Without this funding branches will close in large and small communities throughout the state. Library Cooperative funding is critical for Interlibrary Loan, resource sharing, and training. Several of the 5 MLC’s may not survive without this funding.

Every year the Boy Scouts of America celebrates the anniversary of the founding of the program by Lord Baden Powell. Come and participate in the celebration of this tradition with our church on Sunday, February 13, 2011 at both services: 8:30 am Contemporary and 10:55 am Traditional. This opportunity for the Scouts is a way to help make people in faith communities aware of scouting and gives the Scouts a chance to give back to their churches and contribute in a religious service.

An unforgettable cultural music and missions event, you won’t want to miss, will take place on Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at 7 pm. A New Song – International is a group of 10 young adults from Chile and Romania who share about their country and culture and perform a wide variety of musical styles. Come watch and enjoy the church’s initial Black Awareness program, in honor of Black History Month, on Sunday, February 20, 2011 at both services: 8:30 am Contemporary and 10:55 am Traditional. The 6th-11th grade Sunday School Class will participate in a short program that will introduce soloist Gerald Simmons who will sing a-cappella and The Hooks Crew who will perform an ‘interpretative music’ experience. This event will enhance the knowledge of the important roles African-Americans have played in the development of America and the Methodist Church.

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. -- Three Brevard County men are in jail after deputies caught them red-handed on hidden surveillance as they robbed an elderly man in
his home.

Surveillance video set up by deputies inside the victim's Cocoa residence caught the three men walking through the home on Monday morning. The suspects had no idea they were on video that was being monitored by deputies.

The homeowner agreed to let detectives install cameras in his house that provided a live feed back at police headquarters. When detectives arrived at work Monday morning, they were surprised at what they saw going on inside an elderly man's home.

Three men had broken into the home and were about to take an elderly man to empty out his bank account.

"We actually saw a live shot of the home invaders inside the home with masks," said
Sgt. David Marich, Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

The video system had been installed weeks earlier because the victim was being targeted in an extortion plot.

With a crime happening before their eyes, deputies were dispatched to intercept the burglars and found them just about to leave the home to force the 87-year-old to empty his bank account.

"One was in the car when we converged on the residence with the victim and they were going to drive to the bank and make him get money out before they would release him," said Sgt. Marich. Investigators say Christopher Comella, Anthony Millar and Matthew Zachas are now behind bars facing home invasion and kidnapping charges.

Detectives say the three men have been in trouble with the law before.

"This is a group known in the Port St. John community as burglars. They have extensive criminal histories. In this case, they just took advantage of his age," said Sgt. Marich.

Deputies say during the initial extortion incident that led to the surveillance a man and woman knocked on the homeowner’s door pretending to be police. Detectives believe the man involved was one of the three arrested. They say the investigation is ongoing and they are working to determine the woman’s identity.

As a salute to the supportive residents of Brevard County, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is offering Brevard residents and up to five guests free admission to Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex September 10-12, 2010 during the annual Salute to Brevard Residents weekend. Residents need to show proof of residency, in the form of a driver's license or utility bill, to gain complimentary admission to the Visitor Complex.

The next Brevard County Commission meeting is on Thursday, July 22 at 6 p.m. in Viera at the County Commission Chambers. The last item on the agenda is the issue about the libraries. Please show your support in whatever what you can.

Friends of the Library,
Your library needs your help again. Please do whatever you can.
There is no emergency - YET.
However, "privatization" - awarding a juicy government contract - for "managing" the libraries is on the table. No other county in all of Florida has replaced even a single free public library with a private for-profit corporation. Commissioners Infantini and Anderson have already begun the process for all 17 libraries in Brevard. Is this stewardship a positive and conservative thing to do? Is it for the good of our citizens?
Please do the following:

IMAGINE the following:
Imagine - Elected officials who govern but do not believe that their county serves people better than non-government. These well paid commissioners seek to award a juicy government contract to an out-of-state corporation to do their jobs for them with our taxes!
Imagine - A County Commissioner who publicly asks to use funds for services that are unrelated to the library taxes - funding which is illegal and/or impossible.
Imagine - Sending Brevard tax dollars to Maryland or Texas while firing people who work and live and pay taxes in Brevard. (The "ripple effect" on Brevard's small businesses is nearly unimaginable.) The fact that our present librarians are educated, highly qualified, experienced specialists never seems to enter the question for some reason.
Imagine - Elected officials underfunded the public libraries with cuts that inadvertently went from "trimming fat to cutting muscle and bone" (32% of prior tax cuts).
Imagine - A private corporation will answer to the people responsible for awarding them a juicy government contract. Will it serve the preferences based on 3.5 million annual patron visits or the choices made by the one commissioner's appointees in Melbourne Beach's advisory group who want to censor one DVD that offends her now and anything else she might find offensive in the future?
Imagine - An elected official who, while wining and dining on Marcos Island, discovered a corporation he might award a juicy government contract to, a corporation which will do the governing and overseeing of a library system that has been "governed" into financial straights.
Imagine - Commissioners obfuscating simple millage rates in order to claim that millage rate increases are "more taxes." (Reality See-Saw: property values go up and millage goes down - property values go down and millage goes up - in order to keep the same dollar amount.)
Imagine - Elected officials claiming "ideological philosophies" while denying services to the public who pays for those services.
Imagine - Elected public servants destroying property values by reducing services which deliver $1.83 in value for every $1 in taxes. (For proof of this see http://dlis.dos.state.fl.us/bld/roi/ )
Imagine - Hundreds of thousands of present dollars already collected and held by Friends of the Library groups being used to assure profits for Maryland or Texas companies who in turn will "manage" funding.
Imagine - Over 73,000 hours annualy of free volunteer time in Brevard libraries being used to create larger profits for Maryland and Texas corporations.
Imagine - The political machinations behind the scenes seek to destroy a management system that has been judged as superb and to replace it with a juicy government contract. Why does all of this seem so vidictive? What does it have to do with maintaining the good of the libraries and the citizens served?
Imagine - The story printed in Florida Today (see the pdf file attachment) tells of two commissioners who wanted to continue cutting library funding and lost the vote. They then try to attain the opposite of what we and all the others who support our libraries were promised.
Oops! We don't have to imagine any of this. This is all being done to a frustrated public who seeks elected officials who will solve problems, not create more problems. We do not need defeatists; we need problem solvers.

Please contact all of our County Commissioners with one simple message.
"DON'T SELL US OUT."

The Baccalaureate Service is a nondenominational service for the 2010 graduating class of Space Coast High School. Students and their families are invited to take part in this event. All seniors are requested to be at the church by 5:30, in their graduation gowns, to line up for the processional. Everyone is then invited to take part in the fellowship that will be held immediately following the service in the fellowship hall. Refreshments will be provided by FUMC PSJ but they are asking families, if possible, to contribute finger foods for this. Please bring your food items to the Fellowship Hall between 5:30-5:45 pm on the night of the Baccalaureate Service.

Media Assistants should not be cut...

In my opinion media assistants should not be cut from our schools. Here's why...

> At the elementary school level, the Media Assistants are the ones who perform the puppet show while the Media Specialist reads the story. They are the ones checking books in and out for students from the whole school while the Media Specialist is teaching just one class. Not to mention, they do lunchroom duty too!

> At the secondary school level the Media Assistants are the face at the checkout desk, they are the ones collecting fines, finding books and resources, solving computer problems while the Media Specialists are working with one class. The Media Center is "open" prior to school start time and they are FULL from the moment the doors open.

> Without a Media Assistant, the library would, in practicality, be closed to all other students while the Media Specialist is teaching. If not closed, then when does the Media Specialist serve the student? Do they stop their instruction each time a student from the rest of the student body stops in and needs help to find a book? There will be continual interruptions.

The Media Assistant is needed in the media center to serve the students all day long. Also, it is volunteers and interns who shelve the books.

I appreciate your input related to our budget as well as you ongoing support for our schools. I did want to make sure you understood the complete context related to these positions. The Area Coordinator positions would be added through an Area Offices reorganization in which seven other positions, including an Area Superintendent, would be eliminated. In the end, we would reduce spending by $100,000 and, I believe, provide better service to both schools and community members. Similarly, the Communications Coordinator would be added through a District Communications reorganization that eliminates from our operating budget two other positions and a contract for services. The total savings here would represent about $140,00. In this case I believe we will need to be creative as we do more with less to provide the same level of service—but we are excited about some upcoming changes that would put our schools and students on Brevard Public Schools television far more than they are now. So in the end, we could have simply stayed with the staffing and organizational structure that we had. Had we done so, however, we would be required to trim $240,000 more from the budget by eliminating more people and/or programs—not less.

School District proposed budget cuts - No Wait... 4 new positons?!

The School District has it's proposed budget cuts on-line for all to see...
Proposed Brevard School Budget cuts
Not the easiest thing to read. Lots of job loss, between clerical, custodial and media assistants. Favorite programs will be sacrificed, in example Lagoon Quest and BLAST.
But WAIT a minute... Look closer, #16 and #19 is the proposal for four new positions! The proposed salaries for those is over a quarter of a million dollars, $292,977! Are they teaching positions- No! They are 3 Area Supervisors/coordinator positions and 1 Communications/coordinator position. Does not sound like these positions work directly with the student?

To be fair, there has been a vacant Area Supervisor, which will not be filled. This vacancy has been there a while. But, it appears,they have been getting the job done without the three/four new positions so far. I understand others have had to pick up the slack and take on additional duties to cover the vacancy. However, the rest of the Tier I is cuts, cuts which will put others in the exact same position of picking up work of the other who will be let go.

Maybe it is time to let the Superintendent and the School Board know this is not in the spirit of the budget cuts. Perhaps you want to ask them not to hire 4 new positions at a 1/4 of a million dollars when that expense could save the jobs of others, like it would cover the complete #117 and save 9 households from losing their income.

WASHINGTON - On April 15, President Barack Obama will visit Florida to host
a White House Conference on the Administration's new vision for America's
future in space, the White House today announced.
The President, along with top officials and other space leaders, will discuss
the new course the Administration is charting for NASA and the future of
U.S. leadership in human space flight. Specifically, the conference will
focus on the goals and strategies in this new vision, the next steps, and the new
technologies, new jobs, and new industries it will create. Conference topics
will include the implications of the new strategy for Florida, the nation, and
our ultimate activities in space.
Further logistical details will be announced as they become available.
After an independent review panel found that the previous program to return astronauts to the Moon was fundamentally un-executable, the
President included an additional $6 billion for NASA in his FY2011 budget over
the next five years.

This funding will help us achieve our boldest aspirations in space. The
President's ambitious new strategy pushes the frontiers of innovation to set
NASA on a more dynamic, flexible, and sustainable trajectory that can propel
us on a new journey of innovation and discovery.
The President and the NASA Administrator both believe that we have to be
forward thinking and aggressive in our pursuit of new technologies to take us
beyond low-Earth orbit. The President's plan does this.
A foundational element of this new strategy is to invest in the development
of a targeted set of inter-related technologies and capabilities that can help
us travel from the Earth's cradle to our nearby Solar System neighborhood in a
more effective and affordable way, thus laying the foundation to support
journeys to the Moon, asteroids, and eventually to Mars.
After years of underinvestment in new technology and unrealistic budgeting,
the President's plan will unveil an ambitious plan for NASA that sets the agency
on a reinvigorated path of space exploration.

Brevard schools could lose $29M from budget next year

Brevard Public Schools is estimating that it could lose as much as $29 million next school year, or about 6 percent of its operating budget, according to initial predictions from the Department of Education.

This will be the fourth consecutive year of budget cuts to education. The school district's operating budget this year was about $533 million.

Judy Preston, associate superintendent for financial services, said the DOE hasn't released any documents that would give a more exact estimate of the projected loss. "It's been an unusually quiet year," she said. "When the dust settles from the legislative session, maybe we'll have a better picture."

Last year wasn't quite so calm. Around this time last year, the district was projecting a loss of about $80 million from its operating budget, and thousands of concerned residents gathered at the King Center to plead with the county's legislative delegation to protect education funding.

The crisis was abated because of about $50 million in federal stimulus funding, as well as $9 million in a special property tax increase approved by the Brevard County School Board. Altogether, the district lost $33 million. While this year's situation doesn't seem quite as dire, the funding loss still could lead to job or program cuts.

Superintendent Brian Binggeli told the school board last week that senior staff members have carefully examined each department's budget to take a closer look at where cuts could be made. District officials also are watching to see if legislators will make changes to the class-size amendment. If no changes are made, schools next year must measure class size by individual classes rather than taking a school wide average, according to the amendment approved by voters in 2002.

Pre-kindergarten through third-grade classrooms should have no more than 18 students each and fourth- through eighth-grade classrooms should not exceed 22 students, according to the Florida law. School officials estimate that they would need to hire between 200 and 600 teachers and spend at least $10.8 million to meet the statute. They would be hiring teachers while, for the fifth consecutive year, simultaneously losing students because of the statewide enrollment decline.

Since October 2008, the district has lost 1,000 students.

You may have heard about a local orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Anthony Ware, who went to Haiti to perform surgery. He and his colleagues performed multiple amputations and treated many of the injured. Dr. Ware is returning to Haiti bringing much needed orthopedic supplies.

Dr. Ware is collecting crutches, wheelchairs, canes, walkers, and braces. Please consider donating any unused items to Dr. Ware's Melbourne office.

10 21 2009 update! Messer is moving forward to request zoning change to allow the adult only arcade at Fay Plaza.
Maureen Rupe just happened to be at a land use meeting and OUR PSJ ITEM was on the agenda! It pertained to future land use and thankfully, since Maureen was there, they heard both sides of the story and the request was voted down.
We must gain support from the community if we are to keep PSJ from turning into a Pottersville- or worse!I'd like to invite you to email all the commissioners with your concern. Please get at least 10 commitments from friends and family to send emails to the commissioners! Please feel free to have them email me or join me at Facebook, so we can join forces! Is anyone able to help me with signs for Fay Boulevard? Watch the Happenings, Maureen will have an article to update the issue. The meeting is November 5th, 5 pm at the Viera Goernment center- wear purple! Will you let me know if you will attend? I want to get 100 folks to commit to be there! Not everyone is sympathetic to our postion. I know you are all busy-but the women of PSJ made a huge difference at the advisory board meeting and we need to step up now too. Brevard’s economy will be devastated with the closure of the shuttle program in 2010. Jobs will be lost and families will struggle to meet basic needs. Please become a part of a grass roots effort to support Brevard County’s economy initiated by District 1 County Commissioner, Robin Fisher. His idea is to have at least 500,000 individuals write a letter to the president asking him to support statements he made during his presidential campaign.

The goal is to have half a million letters to President Obama by October 31.

In a Town Hall meeting in Titusville on August 2, 2008 regarding the space program, then Senator Obama said, “So let me be clear, we cannot cede our leadership in space. That's why I am going to close the gap, ensure that our space program doesn't suffer when the shuttle goes out of service." He further explained, "We may extend an additional shuttle launch. We're going to work with Bill Nelson to add at least one more flight beyond 2010, by continuing to support NASA funding, by speeding development of the shuttle's successor, by making sure that all those who work in the space industry in Florida do not lose their jobs when the shuttle is retired because we can't afford to lose their expertise."

September 2010 is around the corner and if we don’t do anything now, it will be too late. We must not let America’s leadership in space be lost. Speak up! Please write to President Obama to keep his promise to the Space Program.

Even though the PSJ advisory Board voted down the request- the commission can still grant the request- that is why it is so important for residents of PSJ to appear at the commission and voice their oppositon to the zoning change. -It is only advice and could be ignored.

There is no Port St. John agenda for November. We did not receive any applications in that area for November. The board does not meet in December. If you are trying to access the County Commission zoning agenda for November, it is not posted yet. It cannot be posted until after the Local Planning Agency hears the request for the Small Scale Plan Amendment on October 19th..

The Port St. John Board is a recommending body, and they recommended denied of Mr. Messer’s request on October 7th. Their recommendation, along with the recommendation of the Local Planning Agency, will be given to the Board of County Commissioners for their consideration. The County Commissioners will consider all evidence provided and judge it with the compatibility of the request with the surrounding area. They make the final decision at their meeting on November 5, 2009, at 5:00 p.m. The meet in the Commission Room, Building C, at the Brevard County Government Center at Viera.

I’m not sure which board you want contact information for. Due to laws that cover this, I cannot give you contact information for the Port St. John Board. The request to change zoning for the strip center on Fay across from the baseball fields is up for a vote on November 5th. It is our County Commissioners, elected officials who will decide if an Adult Gaming Arcade should be allowed near our playgrounds, daycares, local school and churches. The change in zoning would not only allow for the arcade but also ~~Adult XXX Entertainment~~. See attached comment trying to clarify.

If you are concerned about this change in zoning please e-mail the 5 County Commissioners. Their e-mail addresses are below. Our County Commissioner is Robin Fisher, District 1. However it is not just one commissioner that makes the decision. Have your families and friends throughout Brevard write on their grand children's behalf to their district commissioners. Spread the word. PSJ residents rallied together to allow our kids to continue to attend a PSJ school, lets rally together to keep our neighborhoods and playgrounds family friendly.

A fellow PSJ resident called me today with this urgent news... I believe we are early on in the process so I believe we can still make a difference. I knew you would all want to know...

Port St John News --- Zoning changes have been requested which will allow not only gambling arcades, but Adult Entertainment business too. Please share your concern! Watch for updates! Problem is that the zoning changes will allow Adult Entertainment to come in to the area as well. Nice neighbors for the school and our community? Please come to a Zoning meeting 6pm at the PSJ Library Wed October 7, 2009 to learn more!

Strip center on Fay behind Kangaroo has empty space. There are comments that no Adult Entertainment can build near a school but it is always rumored that Challenger 7 could close. If this zone change passes and Challenger 7 does close one day there is no stopping the Adult Entertainment business to open there on Fay next to Dominos.
No one is saying the request is for an Adult Entertainment venue but the zone change would allow for that industry to get it's foot in the PSJ community.
