Some of the cuts Brevard County will have to make

Be there, 7:00pm tonight at the King Center!

If we don't change their minds tonight these are just a few of the cuts Brevard county has proposed for next year.
  • Elimination of Middle School Athletics and Intramurals
  • Elimination of Ninth Grade Athletics and Intramurals
  • Elimination of Junior Varsity Athletic Programs
  • Reduction of 50% of Band/Chorus Uniform and Instrument Allocations (to all Schools)
  • Elimination of 24 School Resource Officers (impacting Elementary and Middle Schools)
  • Reduction of School Technology
  • Possibility of Closing Schools with a student population less than 500. CHALLENGER 7 is on this list!
If we can't change their minds we'll gather together to raise the money BUT we shouldn't have to!

These are proposed cuts! We need to make sure the money is there so they don't have to be made.

We need a 100% reduction in clueless leadership is the problem. Putting things like athletics, band and chorus and even technology on the chopping block shows a complete obliviousness to the job markets students have to choose from. Sports, entertainment, the arts and technology are industries teeming with good career opportunities, and not just quarterbacks and rap stars. There are business, medical, administrative and technical jobs required in any of these fields. I won't even go into the lost scholarship opportunities involved. Cutting these things because we have some antiquated notion that only "reading, writing, and arithmetic" are the practical applications of school show a complete disconnect from the full scope of reality of what people do for a living in this world.

After attending one of the parent meetings at the schools last week, I found out that these are the cuts they are allowed to make without cutting actual academics.

That's why something needs to be done on a higher level so the cuts don't have to be made at all. I think Ammendment 1 and paying for prek programs needs to be overturned. If we all pay a little more on a our taxes we can make up for all the cuts that have been made.

I 100% agree. Amendment 1 was a mistake. It did give anyone big savings individual, and instead took massive amounts away from things we all collectively need and use. All it served was to give the governor a chance to say he cut taxes on his way to the Congress (since VP chances didn't work out).
