Subject: Redistricting
School Board Members,
I'm writing in regards to the "soft re-districting" that is being proposed, specifically with Space Coast Jr/Sr High School. It is my understanding that in a nutshell, the incoming 7th grade students from certain elementary schools in Port St. John will be bussed to Clearlake Middle School. I understand that something needs to be done to ease the overcrowding issue at Space Coast, but this proposal is definately not supported by the people of Port St. John that have children that will be affected.
I have 3 children, all of them have gone to Atlantis Elementary School, my youngest is in 4th grade there. My middle child is a 7th grader at Space Coast and my eldest is a junior at Space Coast. I would never allow my youngest child to go to Clearlake Middle School. If this proposal was passed, I would be forced to home school her or send her to private school. 7th and 8th grade is a most critical time in a child's development. It's when they are pulling away from their parents and making important decisions for themselves. I don't feel comfortable having my child pulled from an environment that she and I know and thrust into a school with students that we doesn't live near or interact with at this critical time in her life.
It's clear that District 2 needs a middle school. Of the 3 elementary schools in our area, Atlantis and Enterprise are at capacity or slightly overcrowded with buildings being built as part of the 7 year plan to alleviate that problem. According to the FISH data, our enrollment is going to continue to go down next year which is what's driving the decision to not build a middle school in District 2.
We have an elementary school in our very area, Challenger 7, sitting at approximately 450 students enrolled. Wouldn't it make more sense to make Challenger a 6th-8th grade middle school and divide the K-5 students up between Atlantis and Enterprise. I know that people don't like change and this proposal isn't without its flaws and difficulties either, but it's better to keep our children within our district that to bus them to another district.
Thank you for your consideration,
Kristy Sanford
