VIERA - Tom McIntyre, an area superintendent for Brevard Public Schools and 30-year educator, died today after battling cancer. He was 56. Since 2003, McIntyre had served as area I superintendent, responsible for the administration and supervision of 24 schools and more than 22,000 students in South Brevard. He started with Brevard County in 1978 as a physical education teacher at Palm Bay Elementary. He went on to be the assistant principal at Melbourne High, Southwest Middle and Stone Middle. He served as principal at Rockledge High and Melbourne High. He also was varsity football coach for Melbourne High.
“Words are inadequate to fully convey the respect and admiration I have felt for Tom,” said Superintendent Richard DiPatri. “His professionalism, his expertise, and truly, his heart for children, made him the consummate educator. To say ‘we will miss him’ does not do justice to this loss.”
A moment of silence will be held in honor of McIntyre at all district schools and offices 10 a.m. Monday, the first day of public school. Funeral arrangements have not been announced yet. McIntyre is survived by his wife, Mary, and children Sean, Patrick and Eric.
