When it comes to steel bands, there's more sophistication to the music than meets the ears.
Listen yourself Thursday evening when the Space Coast Jr./Sr. High Space Coast Steel performs at a joint concert with the University of Florida's Sunshine Steelers.
The concert also will feature Tom Reynolds, originally from St. Croix. Now living in Sanford, Reynolds is a master steel drum maker and tuner. He also is the "Reynolds" part of the band Hamilton, Joe Frank and Reynolds, which recorded "Don't Pull Your Love Out on Me Baby."
"We're going to be playing everything from Latin to calypso to some modern steel drum arrangements," said Ed Anderson, the music teacher and band director who formed Space Coast Steel.
"Dr. Ken Broadway (UF professor of percussion) will perform with Space Coast
Steel on a jazz piece called 'New Math.' "
