School District proposed budget cuts - No Wait... 4 new positons?!

The School District has it's proposed budget cuts on-line for all to see...
Proposed Brevard School Budget cuts
Not the easiest thing to read. Lots of job loss, between clerical, custodial and media assistants. Favorite programs will be sacrificed, in example Lagoon Quest and BLAST.
But WAIT a minute... Look closer, #16 and #19 is the proposal for four new positions! The proposed salaries for those is over a quarter of a million dollars, $292,977! Are they teaching positions- No! They are 3 Area Supervisors/coordinator positions and 1 Communications/coordinator position. Does not sound like these positions work directly with the student?

To be fair, there has been a vacant Area Supervisor, which will not be filled. This vacancy has been there a while. But, it appears, they have been getting the job done without the three/four new positions so far. I understand others have had to pick up the slack and take on additional duties to cover the vacancy. However, the rest of the Tier I is cuts, cuts which will put others in the exact same position of picking up work of the other who will be let go.

Maybe it is time to let the Superintendent and the School Board know this is not in the spirit of the budget cuts. Perhaps you want to ask them not to hire 4 new positions at a 1/4 of a million dollars when that expense could save the jobs of others, like it would cover the complete #117 and save 9 households from losing their income.

If you want to write them here are their e-mail addresses...

Sample e-mail...
Good Afternoon,

I am a parent with children in the Brevard Public Schools. I have been looking at the proposed budget cuts on the school board website. I was sad to see many treasured programs (Lagoon Quest and BLAST) on the chopping block. However, I was more alarmed to see the proposal of additional positions on this agenda, positions of staff that do not work directly with students.

In Tier I items #16 and #19 are the proposal of four new positions. The price tag for these four positions is $292,977! Not cuts, additions to the expenses.

Really?! Are you seriously making this proposal of new spending on salaries of over a quarter of a million dollars when, in the same Tier, you will be giving pink slips to numerous households? Many of the proposed eliminated positions listed in Tier I do not work directly with the students. However the Media Assistants that will be let go in proposal items #97 and #117, who work with students directly.

As I see it is, at least nine Media assistants could stay in their jobs at the same cost of the four new proposed positions (#117 is a total of $259,550 vs. #16 and #19).

Without the new positions on the budget it may not be enough to save the Media assistants position but you cannot in good conscience create new positions at high salaries on one hand and hand out pink slips with the other. It will not go unnoticed.

The four new positions are suspect in a time of cutbacks. I would hate to think that they are being created for specific persons. I understand that we are down with an Area Superintendent; we have been down this position for some time now. You have to ask the ones currently working on that workload to keep it up because that is what you do when times are tough. That is exactly what you will ask of the Librarians after you have cut their assistants.

Do not approve new positions proposed in #16 and #19 of Tier I budget cuts. They will not benefit the students directly.

Thank you,

Parent
