Happenings newspaper has a front page story re: soft redistricting. (UPDATE ~ yes I have rec'd my copy. kids got the mail in;-)
Hometown News has an article re: redistricting on page A4. It states that only new to PSJ area are involved in the soft redistricting. THAT IS NOT TRUE. Current PSJ 6th graders, in the zoned areas, will be attending Clearlake next year unless they have a sibling in 7th grade this year. Current PSJ 5th graders, in the zoned areas, will be attending Clearlake in two years. Current PSJ 4th graders, in the zoned areas, will be attending Clearlake middle school. And so on...
The Beacon I have received an e-mail back from Susan Walden at the Beacon asking for people to interview. I replied by e-mail on 12/13, others wrote her as well. Due to some e-mail error she did not receive the comments. If you wish to speak to Mrs. Walden for her articles you can reach her at the website...

Thank you for starting this PSJ blog! I share your concerns about the soft redistricting plan - but I have another immediate concern. Does anyone know where we can get accurate information to confirm or deny the rumor of a serial rapist in PSJ - and if it is true, get the word out quickly and thoroughly? A Cocoa Village store clerk told me before Christmas that her friend, a single mom in PSJ, was just raped in front of her 7 year old daughter, by a dark-skinned ski-masked man who broke in through a window. Florida Today ran the story FIVE days later but reported that deputies would not release any more info including the neighborhood. Then yesterday at church, a friend told me there have been FOUR rapes of single moms in the last 2 weeks, and in one instance a child was molested as well. I tried calling BSO but was transfered to the voicemail of someone who never called me back.
It is true there was a rape, but there is no confirmation that there have been numerous rapes in Port St. John. My advice would be to lock your doors after dark and not open them unless you know the individual.
I saw the article in FL Today but not until someone else mentioned it to me. As far as I know this person has not been caught. Wouldn't it be nice to let the people of PSJ know we may be in danger? Did anyone see this on the news? I didn't. Why is it that a person can jay walk in Orlando and it makes the news, but a rape happens in PSJ and it's not even newsworthy? Or did I just miss it?
I've heard different things about crimes in PSJ too, but have found nothing to substantiate it. It's all heresay at this point. It sure would be nice to know the truth.
And I think all of us are aware of the crimes that appear to be teen related such as cars being broken into, damage to property, etc. While they aren't violent crimes, they're still crimes. I wish these teens, if that's what they are, would find a more positive way to spend their time!
I heard about rape, but not numerous rapes. I didn't not see it on the news, but in the newspaper. I did hear about a stabbing in the PSJ area, I cant remember the name of the street but it was over near Ackerman.
as far as non violent crimes, there have been numerous break-ins in the area.
What do we do next?
How can we get more people involved to stop the soft- redistricting?
Are we making signs to post around PSJ?
Do we need more pizza box tops? Do you think they helped?
Who is going to the next meeting?
Who is speaking?
Can someone sign me up to speak?
Thank you for everything you have done!
Here is a copy of letter I have written to school board members:
Hello
I am a homeowner in Port St John, whose children have attended Space Coast. I am strongly opposed to the plan to send our Port St John children to Clearlake Middle School.
This will adversely affect our children's education and also adversely affect our property values. A few years ago (2004?) Port St John residents were promised a Middle School because the current Space Coast building was being converted to a high school. That did not happen and the middle school children have been educated in portables on the grounds since and it was reclassifed as a JR/SR school. That is not the best solution, However it is vastly preferable to having our children bussed into a low income area and stealing their future opportunities (both educational and social). In 2007 one of my children was the only student to graduate Space Coast High School with both a high school diploma and an AA degree from Brevard Community College. This would never have been possible had she been subjected to an education at Clearlake Middle School. Please do not misunderstand those residents living in that area have made their choice to make their homes there and send their children to those schools. I respect those choices. Please respect our choices to live in Port St John and send our children to Port St John schools.
Thank you
Please let the school board know that you are not supporting this plan as well and if there is anything else I can do.
Thank you
This this response I rcvd from Robert Jordan:
Dear Ms. Carmello
The School Board will be considering this matter over the next few months. Information was presented to the Board on December 11, 2007 and again will be presented as information on January 22, 2008. On February 12, 2008, the item will be brought for possible action to advertise for a public hearing on March 25, 2008.
A proposed middle school is contained in the ten (10) year capital plan with a current projected occupancy date of 2012. The district is continuing to monitor student membership and funding availability. My personal desire is that we continue with our planning to in fact build the middle school. I am hoping this will come to fruition... and that will be my push to see that this is accomplished.
In the community meetings conducted when Space Coast was a middle school, the desire for the high school population to be served in Port St. John and an available four-hundred (400) student stations was discussed. The District proceeded to add a grade each year to respond to community desires for a high school in the community to make Space Coast into a Junior Senior High School. It was also indicated that the membership and fiscal trends would be monitored in addressing any future middle school.
The current options being discussed consider use of available capacity in adjacent facilities (i.e. Clearlake) and provide some relief to SCJSHS in the number of portables needed. In the meanwhile enrollment and fiscal trends will be monitored. The entire 7/8 population in Port St. John is not affected by the proposals being discussed but rather a defined area. If you have access to the District web site at www.brevard.k12.fl.us you can view the description and maps by going to the School Board agenda of December 11, 2007 (Item H-13
Thanks for your comments and please know that I will continue to consider them as we debate this very important issue for our community.

I'm glad that you received an answering e-mail. A lot of Mr. Jordan reply sounds exactly like the letter Dr. Bobay sent home on Friday the 11th. Still waiting to hear on one of my e-mails.
