School Board Meeting Comments

Well, it went for a long night at the School Board Meeting last night. 13 Port St. John parents attended. Spread the word to everyone in Port St. John, no one knows that they (the school district) want this in place for next school year and that it could affect EVERY rising 7th grader. One of their proposals was to split PSJ down the middle and send 1/2 of all 7-8 graders to Clearlake and 1/2 to Jackson with NONE going to Space Coast (this includes Enterprise students.) WHY?!? WE HAVE A JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL RIGHT HERE.

Their plans, as of today,
NO ONE IS SAFE... Possibly your 6th grader can attend Space Coast if you are in the red shaded areas on the map if you have a 7th grader at Space Coast now. If you have an 8th grader or 9-12 grader at Space Coast your child will not be attending Space Coast! This point was addressed specifically in the meeting last night, this is not speculation. The example they gave was... if you have a 10th grade student your child is not grandfathered into Space Coast.

Misled...
I believe, the Superintendent and area Superintendents misled the school board members using vague wording like "new students" leaving the school board members with the impression that it was only new to the area students that would be affected. Board members spoke to that as well. REVISED: After discussion, perhaps "deliberately" was too strong perhaps it was lack of explanation.

Next step, Write our local Legislature...
We have to stop this now, WE HAVE A JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL HERE, we do. Space Coast is a middle school that they have added higher grades to. The next step is to write our local legislature and let the state level know what they are doing. WE HAVE A JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL!

I think the important thing to do now is make other parents aware. I emailed Ms. Tomlinson, principal at Atlantis, asking if she could send something out and talk to the other principals.

We need time to research schools.

I wonder if there will be less people purchasing homes in PSJ now. I know I bought here because of the schools.

I also have a call into Dr. Bobay. Let me know if you have anything specific you want me to ask.

Would Dr. Bobay be willing to sit down with some parents at the Library or the community center and field questions?

I was unable to attend the school board meeting last night and just finished watching the video that pertains to us online. I am providing a direct link to the videos of the board meeting for any others that may want this information. Discussion about agenda item H-13, the soft redistricting plan, can be found in video five. Follow the link, click on video five, and skip ahead to section 59:57.

I found it very interesting that Dr. Dipatri feels there will be no impact on prospective SCJH children and their parents from this plan, since in essence, what would they miss if they have never experienced SCJH.

It would help if I had remembered to post the link to video five. Sorry about that.

Good grief, I guess the link is too long to capture on this blog so I am including the ending. Type it in directly after the word Gallery with no spaces.
