This is an e-mail sent to the school board. I have changed the name to initials. It's a great solution.
Hello, my name is NBK. I live in Port St. John. My daughter is in 4th grade at Challenger 7. My son is in 11th grade at Space Coast. I spoke at the 22 Jan 08 School Board Meeting about the proposed soft redistricting. I also heard the School Boards remarks that there was not enough funds to build a Middle School for Port St. John, but if we could find another solution that would be considered.
I think I have found another solution.
The FY 2007-2008 – 2011-2012/ By Area School Capacity and Projected Student Membership Analysis presentation, on the BCPS Web Site, (http://ppm.brevard.k12.fl.us/SAP/sap_2007/5-C_0708-1011Area.pdf) shows Space Coast Jr/Sr High has a Factored Capacity of 1,739; but the enrollment is 2,177. This means that Space Coast has 438 more students that it should hold. The projected enrollment for Space Coast decreases to 2,065 for the 11-12 school year, so it is projected to have 326 students more than it can hold. So to be in compliance Space Coast needs to add at least 326 student stations.
I also found a PDF file on the web site titled Florida Department of Education 5 Year Survey Recommendation, (http://ppm.brevard.k12.fl.us/EPS/EPS05.pdf), page 78. It shows a seven classroom addition to Merritt Island High School. This addition will add 175 student stations, 5,600 square foot area, for $1,310,400. It also shows additional toilets, 400 square foot area, for $93,600. So if 3 of these seven classroom additions could be built at Space Coast it will add 525 student stations at a cost of $3,931,200 for the classrooms. I am assuming it would require additional toilets, but I do not know if one, two, or three 400 square foot spaces would be needed. One additional toilet area would bring the cost to $4,024,800; two would bring the cost to $4,118,400; three to $4,212,000. I would guess that there could be additional costs because of inflation and modifications to adapt the classrooms for Space Coast Jr/Sr High School.
The minutes for the 11/28/07 meeting of the Brevard Public Schools Educational Services Facility (http://www.brevard.k12.fl.us/School_Board/eAgendaTOC/01-22-2008%20Regular%20School%20Board%20Meeting%20on%20Tuesday,%20January%2022,%202008/CFA8C526-ABA6-40DF-AF0B-2D37694FF107.pdf) shows that $3,021,601.06 has been collected from impact fees in District 4 for partial funding of new Middle School “EE”. So it appears to me most of the money needed for this project is already available, and it is within the $5,000,000 suggested by Mr. Hughes at the 1/22/08 meeting.
Thanks you for reading my proposal,
NBK
