Very tired from the 5 hour School Board meeting...
Then they table it for a workshop. Well, this is borrowed from the Florida Today's paper but I think it's says it all...

As the School Board states they are being forced to address utilization of schools and move students around to make capacity closer to 100% at each school due to Senate Bill 360 I have written to Senator Bill Nelson to see if there are any loop holes in this mandate. I also described to him what our school board is proposing to do to our children to meet this requirement. Will forward any response from Mr. Nelson. It was a very long meeting but I found hope in some of Mr. Jordans comments regarding not wanting to harm any of the kids and he feels dividing the community, having kids on a bus for 45 minutes and dividing families would be harmful as we all believe also. The board is scheduling a "workshop" to discuss the issue as well as possible other options. It will be open to the public at least they said it would tonight. I think it is positive that they are willing to look at other options. I did find it distressing that Dr. Dipatri said one of the reasons he felt a workshop would be beneficial is because some of the community is confused. I beg to differ.......we are not confused. We don't want our kids sent to Cocoa when we have a wonderful school right here. Amy Kneesey submitted a possible solution which wasn't presented to the board in their paperwork...hmmmm. She said, Why not make Cocoa High a Jr/Sr. High? Clearlake kids would go there, Clearlake would become the adult ed building.... If both Cocoa and Clearlake are under capacity------sounds like a great plan ! Mr. Jordan also suggested instead of building a whole new Space Coast middle school -add permanent classrooms which would be so much cheaper--Space Coast has the infrastructure already. Even at 126% capacity the kids are getting thru the lunch line, the media center is stocked with enough computers and books-- sounds like a plan. Dr. Dipatri also mentioned that over 20% of kids in Brevard County attend out of area schools....the difference is--this is by choice. Ours would be a forced out of area. Mr. Hughes brought up the fact that some communities don't even have a school.....so the kids living there have to be bussed to another community. Again that is by choice, if someone of child bearing age purchases a home in a community without a school that is their choice--I fail to see the relavence of his comment to this situation.
As I understand it from the workshop they do not have rise capacity to 100% but they have to decrease capacity at over crowded school. It's not efficient but it will be okay, per DiPatri.

Have you heard back from Senator Nelson?
