Here's some numbers... (Thanks NBK)
Edgewood takes 200 students per grade. 110 of them come from Merritt Island and then a corridor bus that started in Titusville (2 stops), PSJ (1 stop at Atlantis), and 2 stops in Cocoa (Fairglen and Clearlake) when Edgewood first opened. Then Clearlake was taken off the bus route because they had enough kids to fill their own bus. Unknown if they all lived in the Clearlake district or if they just caught the bus there.
There are 4 Elementary Schools listed for Cocoa; Cambridge (504 current student enrollment), Endeavour (564), Fairglen (717), and Saturn (729). But Endeavour is in the McNair district. So if you add the numbers of the schools that are suppose to feed Clearlake together and divide by 7 (K-6) you get an average of 278.6 (504 + 717 + 729 / 7) students per grade. 278.6 * 2 is 557. So if you assume a constant number of students per grade there should be about 557 students enrolled at Clearlake, but there are only 411 students enrolled there. That leaves about 146 students that should be there that attend school somewhere else. Clearlake has a capacity of 871.

A "Group Total" is at the bottom of each Area. The only schools that are consistently in the red are the Jr/Sr High Schools. BCPS is planning on building school "CCC" in Palm Bay because Bayside (the newest HS after Viera) is overcrowded. Their own projection for the "Group Total" only show the HSs for Area 1 red this year. It is in the black for the rest of the projection. Space Coast is pretty consistent at 119% for the study. Overall for Brevard County the Jr/Sr High Schools are the only schools in the red at about 109%.

How about the students that are bussed out of that area for elementary to Freedom 7 in Cocoa Beach, not a huge amount but where will they be going? Are they guaranteed a spot at either Edgewood or Cocoa Beach JR/SR high? There are students attending there as well as Edgewood.....
i am not sure if your numbers are from this year or for next year, but i have a letter that we received from dr. winn at edgewood (meeting on december 17th) it states: the first 55 seats are set aside for merritt island students, if there are more qualified applicants then a lottery will be held and 55 student names will be drawn. undrawn merritt island names will be put on the overall waiting list. as for the rest of central brevard (mims to pineda causeway)the remaining 145 seats will be drawn for in a lottery as well. the bus routes are determined by need and can change yearly. parents are responsible for getting thier children to the bus stop themselves. the 55 students from merritt island are incoming 7th graders from the elementary schools in merritt island any unfilled merritt island slots will be added to the 2nd lottery.

the letter (or packet) is titled most commonly asked questions and answers.
Did you know the IB program is already at Clearlake? I did not understand that it was. The School Board really needs to promote that. If Cocoa Beach IB program is in such demand why then is Clearlake not full? There is lack of getting the word out.
I am very appreciative of the personal answers, in e-mail, I have received from Dr. Barb Murray (School Board). Not necessarily the answers I want to hear but very to the point and sincere. Here is a series of e-mails and her responses re: IB program at Clearlake...

David and Doreen,
Your points and questions are well received. It seems that we have been given different answers at different times which I am not happy about.
Our original plan and message was to not impact current students and their siblings. It appears that changes from that message are being proposed. I will look into the matter and get back to you. At this time, I will not support moving students to another school in the middle of their current placement.
I strongly encourage parents to explore the new program at Clearlake. I visited with students and teachers this week at the school and all were impressive.

Good Morning Dr. Murray,
Thank you for your reply to my e-mail. Once I hit the "send" button on the last Thank you a new question came to me. I hope you can answer it for me.
Will the IB program be up and running for next school year at Clearlake? I understood it to be on hold for Clearlake.
I believe the Cambridge and IB programs are wonderful. Once a program is in place for Clearlake, I believe it will have great draw to help fill the school with willing students and families that will support the program and the school.
With that program in place, could the bussing of Port St John student to Clearlake be dropped off the proposed soft redistricting plans?
Thank you,
Doreen Erickson

The MYP program began at Clearlake this last fall. You may want to visit just to see the wonderful things happening.
Thank you for writing.

Doreen,
I did not answer part 2. If a large number of Port St. John students would qualify and elect to attend Clearlake, it could have a positive impact on the soft redisdtricting plan.

I don't think they are "guaranteed" a spot at Edgewood or Cocoa Beach, they would still have to apply and go through thier lottery systems. Unless they get a spot due to thier IB status-Cocoa Beach is an IB school, Edgewood is not.
