I sent an email to Dr. Bobay and the board members the day of the last school board meeting. (Just in case they forgot). This was Bobay's response today:
I appreciated your additional comments concerning “soft redistricting”. The School Board will hold a workshop on February 8, 2008 at 3:00 at the Government Building, Florida Room, Building C 3rd floor to further discuss this issue. On February 12, 2008, the item will be brought for possible action to advertise for a public hearing on March 25, 2008.
Your comments will be considered and shared with the members of the School Board.
Sincerely,

Here is a letter I wrote to the School Board Members and a response
To all School Board Members.
I would like to thank you all for concluding your meeting with attending a workshop to revisit soft-redistricting in Port St. John. As a parent of 6th grader at Atlantis My son is looking forward to attend Space Coast next year with his older brother who will be in 10th grade. I have explained to my youngest son that this may not happen. As a parent I understand that if the board does go through with the transfer to Clearlake my son will not be able to attend Space Coast with having another sibling at Space Coast already. This is because the sibling is not in middle school (7th grader) but high school student? As a parent I don't understand the logic of that idea. How many parents will have a 7th grader in Space Coast now and a 6th grader attending next year? I would have to say less than 5 percent. As a parent please look over all your options and keep an open mind in your workshop. Sending almost 200 children from
3 PSJ elemantary schools of 6th graders to another area school next year will be putting alot of children in dangerous situations with bussing and transporting our children.
Another question that I do have is if my child has to attend Clearlake next year and has been in a gifted program at Atlantis since Kindergarten, will my child be elgible for the IB Program at Clearlake next year? Also what will happen if he attends 2 yrs of the IB Program at Clearlake and then continues his high school years in his district of Space Coast? I believe that Space Coast does not have an IB Program?
I hope the workshop will be plannned soon since a decision needs to be make soon. Their is around 4 months of school left this year. As a parent I would like my child to be able to visit his new middle school before the school year ends. Moving up from elemantary school is a big step for children!
Thank you for your comments. I hope you will attend or watch our soft redistricting workshop on February 8th from 3:00-5:00. I am troubled by all of the changes that are being proposed across the county. I am looking forward to having meaning conversation with the other board members and staff. We need to come up with solutions that do more than just bring buildings up to capacity. State law requires that we make some tough decisions this year, but I plan to ensure that the educational interests of children and families are also respected.
Sincerely,
Amy Kneessy
