School Board Budget cuts...

Almost $30 million cut...
They are deferring building new classrooms and defering roof & a/c replacements for other schools. What does this mean for the future of Space Coast? No teachers to lose jobs, as of yesterday.
The smartest thing I read was the energy savings by shuttering the schools during spring and winter break so they do not cool or heat to the extent needed with windows radiating heat into the building. I hope they add the shutters to the year round schools on their breaks too.

Brevard School jobs are safe – for now. Staff has prepared a plan for Board review that will preserve all existing BPS personnel including annual contract employees. All down-sizing will occur through attrition and already vacant positions. Due in no small part to a $17M reserve, staff developed a plan that preserves programs for students while avoiding lay-offs. But the pain is not over as Florida’s revenues continue to drop. The State budget, and the resulting BPS budget, is not a guarantee, only an estimate. Just as we took multiple cuts during the 2007-2008 school year, we need to anticipate further cuts in the coming school year. How many elected officials told us “schools will be held harmless”?

I went to the parent leadership meeting where dr. dipatri spoke to all us parent about the budget cuts. i have all this information and it is public. i will leave it in the volunteer room at atlantis. ALL brevard schools were asked to send a parent representative to this meeting and all AP's and Principal were at a meeting similar to ours.

my opinion of the budget cuts. well they were inevitible and stuff had to be cut, but i think the district has done a decent job of preserving what is most important to the schools...TEACHERS Thier supply budgets are cut, but at least they will be there to teach our kids. the energy conservation information was great, there are SOO many ways we can all help out with this part and i urge everyone to speak out about the ways you think would help...let administration know or let this blog know and i'll take care of getting the word out!
